The Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru resort has celebrated the first successful hatching of a Hawksbill sea turtle on its beach since 2015. The eggs were deposited on 24 January and the hatchlings emerged on the afternoon of 23 March, making their way across the warm sand toward the lagoon.
Guests and staff observed the delicate process, which highlights the resort’s long‑term marine conservation program managed by its on‑site Marine Lab. For more than twenty years the lab has been involved in coral restoration, reef monitoring, and biodiversity studies, while also offering educational talks on turtle and shark protection.
Hawksbill turtles are classified as critically endangered and continue to face threats such as habitat loss, pollution, and climate change throughout the Maldives. Their return to Vabbinfaru underscores the positive impact of sustained conservation efforts.
“Moments like this are truly special,” said Alex Burden, Marine Lab Manager at Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru. “The appearance of a sea turtle on our shore demonstrates what dedicated, long‑term environmental stewardship can achieve.”
