Ageing Accelerated: NH Collection Maldives Reethi Reveals the World’s First Certified Underwater‑Aged Rum by a Resort

In collaboration with the premium rum producer Planteray, NH Collection Maldives Reethi Resort has completed a pioneering experiment: the first ever certified underwater ageing of rum carried out by a hotel.

During a twelve‑month period, selected bottles of Planteray rum were placed in custom metal cages and lowered to a depth of ten metres off the coast of the UNESCO‑protected Baa Atoll. The underwater environment – steady temperature, hydrostatic pressure and gentle sea currents – acted as a natural cellar, allowing the spirit to mature in a unique way.

According to Fannie Thibaud, Deputy Master Blender at Planteray, the year‑long submersion gave the rum greater roundness, smoothness and complexity. Valentin Osolos, General Manager of the resort, highlighted the project as an innovative blend of craftsmanship and storytelling that will become a permanent feature of the property’s culinary offering.

Following the success of the inaugural batch, Planteray has supplied additional rum expressions for a second year‑long underwater ageing cycle. Guests can taste the sea‑aged rum at the resort’s signature bar, Handhuvaru, either neat or in creative cocktails such as “Chai on the Rocks” (aged XO rum with chai spices) and “Mocha Molasses” (overproof rum with espresso and dark chocolate).

The experiment demonstrates how surrendering control to natural marine conditions can produce a distinctive spirit, while also reinforcing the resort’s connection to its protected marine surroundings.
