Flights at Dubai International Airport were temporarily halted on Monday after a fire erupted in a fuel tank that authorities linked to a drone attack, according to AFP.
The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority announced the precautionary suspension to safeguard passengers and staff, citing a statement posted on X by the Dubai Media Office and referencing AGERPRES.
The incident caused a blaze in the fuel tank, but no injuries were reported and the fire has since been contained.
Dubai Airport, the world’s busiest hub for international passenger traffic and the main base of Emirates, has experienced repeated disruptions since the start of the U.S.-Israeli operation against Iran on 28 February and the subsequent retaliatory strikes launched by Iran against the UAE and other Gulf neighbours.
Last week a drone crash near the airport injured four people. Since the conflict began, Iran has launched more than 1,800 missiles and drones at the UAE, according to the Emirati Defence Ministry, causing significant disruption to daily life and air traffic.
The Emirati defence forces have intercepted most of the projectiles; the ministry reports six deaths since the war’s onset – four civilians and two soldiers who perished in a helicopter crash attributed to a technical malfunction.
Iran has also targeted U.S. military bases and civilian infrastructure across the Gulf region. Saudi Arabia announced the interception of five drones, Kuwait destroyed two, and an Italian‑American military base in Kuwait was hit by a drone.
Iran’s foreign minister justified the attacks by claiming “numerous pieces of evidence” that U.S. bases in the Gulf are being used to strike Iran.
Growing scepticism about a swift resolution has led to the cancellation of the Formula One races scheduled in Bahrain (10‑12 April) and Saudi Arabia (17‑19 April).
