The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is rolling out three artificial‑intelligence‑driven initiatives aimed at streamlining air‑cargo processes, enhancing safety and compliance, and fostering innovation across the sector.
AI‑powered knowledge tool: IATA is introducing an AI Subject Matter Expert (AI SME), a mobile and web application that lets users query IATA cargo and safety manuals in everyday language. The system returns precise answers within seconds, helping teams make quicker operational decisions, stay compliant and reduce time spent searching for information. The AI SME will first cover the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) and the Cargo Handling Manual (ICHM), with additional publications to follow.
Collaboration hub: The Air Cargo AI Excellence Hub will bring together airlines, ground handlers, freight forwarders, technology providers and regulators. Its purpose is to coordinate the safe and orderly adoption of AI, share best‑practice guidance on governance and compliance, and develop common standards.
Interline AI pilot: Together with strategic partners, IATA is exploring how AI can improve interline cargo handling. The goal is to create a use case that enables airlines using different IT systems to exchange booking, disruption and cancellation data in real time through AI agents, thereby achieving system interoperability. This effort is part of the Data & Technology Proof‑of‑Concept programme under the Strategic Partnerships umbrella.
“AI holds huge potential to accelerate the digital transformation of air cargo. These initiatives will help the industry adopt AI in a consistent, interoperable way that aligns with global aviation standards. We will also learn where further standards and collaborative development can make operations safer, smarter and more efficient,” said Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo.
