Air Cargo Boosts Peru’s Fresh‑Produce Export Growth

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has published a new report highlighting the pivotal role of air cargo in Peru’s rapid export expansion, positioning the country among the world’s top exporters of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Key findings:

  • Overall export value rose from US$33.7 billion in 2015 to US$90.1 billion in 2025, a compound annual growth rate of 10.3 %, roughly four times the global average of 2.19 %.
  • The market for fresh fruit and vegetable shipments, which heavily rely on air transport, more than tripled – from US$2.4 billion in 2015 to US$8.1 billion in 2025. Peru now leads worldwide in products such as blueberries, asparagus and fresh grapes.
  • Although the agro‑industry accounts for less than 10 % of the total export value, it generates over 40 % of export‑related jobs in the country.
  • Air cargo transports 23 % of the monetary value of Peru’s exports while representing only 1.3 % of the total export tonnage, underscoring its importance for high‑value, time‑sensitive goods.

“Peru’s export success demonstrates how reliable air connectivity enables producers of perishable goods to reach distant, premium markets quickly while preserving quality. This connectivity fuels job creation, economic diversification and long‑term competitiveness,” said Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo.

“For LATAM Cargo, strengthening these routes is essential because they support both export and import flows, ensuring that inputs and technology reach the country on time,” added Andrés Bianchi, Chief Executive Officer of LATAM Cargo Group.
