The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is drawing attention to its recent “Value of Air Transport” study for Peru, released ahead of the country’s first World Cargo Symposium in South America. The analysis quantifies the substantial economic and employment benefits generated by aviation and related tourism.
Key figures from 2023:
- USD 6.2 billion of total economic impact – about 3.2 % of Peru’s GDP.
- 364 000 jobs supported, of which 36 100 are directly in aviation.
- 240 300 tonnes of air cargo handled.
“Peru’s aviation sector is essential for connecting communities, fostering tourism and enabling trade. With strong domestic demand and growing cargo volumes, aviation will continue to be a pillar of Peru’s economic development,” said Willie Walsh, IATA Director General.
IATA outlines three priority actions for Peru to maximise these benefits:
- Cost‑effective infrastructure: Accelerate airport projects in partnership with airlines, adhering to global standards to capture the full economic upside of improved connectivity.
- Competitive charges: Keep airport fees at market‑aligned levels and consider removing the domestic transfer fee (TUUA) to stimulate fleet investment, new routes and hub development.
- Effective regulation: Ensure a stable, predictable regulatory framework based on international norms to support route development and operational efficiency.
