Talking about Italy today is no longer just describing a handful of famous monuments. The narrative has become repetitive – the same squares, the same vistas, the same five landmarks dominate every guidebook. This narrow focus leaves the vast majority of the country in the shadows.
Recent studies show that roughly 70 % of international visitors concentrate their trips on just 1 % of Italy’s territory. The result is overcrowding at iconic sites while countless worthy places remain unseen, not because they are less interesting, but because they receive far less attention.
To counter this imbalance, Visit Italy launched the “Hidden Gems” series. The project deliberately highlights small villages, lesser‑known landscapes and regional traditions, presenting them as essential pieces of Italy’s cultural mosaic rather than optional side trips.
By 2025 the paradox of overtourism became starkly visible: the most visited 1 % of the country accounted for the majority of tourist traffic, while the remaining 99 % stayed largely invisible. This concentration threatens both the visitor experience and the sustainability of the over‑exploited sites.
At TEDxPadova 2025, Visit Italy’s founder Ruben Santopietro described the emerging “Check‑List Era” – a period when travel is reduced to ticking boxes, losing depth, authenticity and genuine connection with places.
In response, the “Luminous Destinations” initiative was introduced in 2026. An independent jury selects ten locations that exemplify a balanced approach to tourism: environmental respect, community engagement, and high‑quality visitor experiences. The award aims to draw attention to destinations that prioritize relationships over numbers.
Both the “99 % of Italy” campaign and “Luminous Destinations” are parts of a broader commitment to use attention responsibly, to broaden the storytelling lens, and to restore complexity to Italy’s image. The future of travel, according to Visit Italy, will be measured not by visitor counts but by the depth of cultural and natural connections forged.
