Main runway at Heraklion International Airport to be shut for upgrades

The Civil Aviation Authority announced that the primary runway of Heraklion International Airport (Crete) will be unavailable from Monday, 19 January 2026 until Monday, 26 January 2026 for refurbishment and safety‑related works.

During this period the airport will continue to operate using the secondary runway, but with restrictions: only aircraft with a maximum of 72 seats will be allowed, and flights will be limited to daylight hours until sunset.

A NOTAM covering the closure has already been issued. The upgrade aims to raise the overall safety standards of “Nikos Kazantzakis” Airport and was scheduled in consultation with airlines to minimise impact on passenger traffic.
