Wizz Air earns top-level IATA SeMS certification

Low‑cost carrier Wizz Air has obtained the IATA Security Management System (SeMS) Level II certification, the highest tier available at the initial certification stage. The assessment evaluates the airline’s risk‑management approach and its proactive security culture.

The airline states it is the first budget carrier and only the second airline in Europe to reach this level. The certification applies to Wizz Air Hungary and Wizz Air Malta, which together operate the carrier’s European network, including flights to and from Bulgaria.

The IATA SeMS programme aims to foster a safety‑first mindset by encouraging continuous risk identification, mitigation and improvement of security procedures throughout the aviation sector.

“Receiving SeMS certification is a significant achievement that highlights our dedication to operational excellence and a forward‑looking safety culture,” said Diarmuid O’Conghaile, Chief Operations Officer of Wizz Air. “Our teams will keep building on this solid base to further enhance security management across our network.”

Certification for the airline’s UK operations is planned for the next phase in 2026.

Frédéric Léger, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Products and Services, added: “SeMS is essential for moving global aviation security from mere compliance to a proactive risk‑based approach that drives continuous improvement. Wizz Air joins the leaders as the first low‑cost airline to achieve this certification and demonstrates its commitment to the highest security standards.”
