Increasing Number of Lao Visitors Choose Malaysia, Strengthening Travel Ties

Malaysia has recorded a noticeable rise in arrivals from Laos during the first half of 2025. Official Malaysian tourism statistics show that 14,733 Lao citizens visited the country in this period, approaching the total of 18,886 recorded for the entire year of 2024.

The growth coincides with Malaysia’s broader effort to revive its tourism sector. On 28 September, the government launched the “Visit Malaysia 2026” campaign in the historic city of Melaka, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim presenting the initiative.

The campaign’s objectives go beyond attracting more visitors. It positions tourism as a catalyst for economic empowerment, social development and cultural preservation, and it includes investments in training, innovation and community‑based tourism projects.

For Lao travelers, Malaysia offers a blend of familiar experiences and new attractions:

  • River cruises on the Melaka waterways (e.g., Jeti Paya Lembar Eco Cruise, Cruise Sungai Linggi) that recall Mekong boat trips, with occasional sightings of crocodiles.
  • The Dutch and Heritage Trail, which passes colonial forts and administrative buildings from the Portuguese, Dutch and British periods.
  • The 80‑metre‑tall Taming Sari Tower, providing a 360‑degree panoramic view of the city.
  • Jonker Street Night Market, offering street food, crafts and a lively atmosphere similar to Lao night markets.

Looking ahead to 2026, Malaysia’s tourism strategy emphasises inclusive growth:

  • Empowering women, youth and marginalized groups through training and job creation in the tourism sector.
  • Supporting innovators, entrepreneurs and start‑ups with funding and mentorship.
  • Expanding digital education to reduce the digital divide in rural and post‑conflict areas.
  • Strengthening local economies by assisting micro, small and medium enterprises.
  • Promoting cultural exchange via performances, culinary events, exhibitions and interactive experiences.

These measures aim to build a tourism industry that is sustainable, inclusive and culturally rich, positioning Malaysia as a leading regional destination while uplifting local communities and safeguarding heritage.
