New Portugal Air Canada flights begin

Air Canada will begin flying between Porto and Montreal three times a week today, and may extend the connection beyond the high season, according to the sales director for the European region.

In statements to Lusa, Margaret Skinner said that the flight will be operated “every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoon”, running until 25 September.

When asked about the possibility of extending this period, she admitted that this was the goal.

“We always start with a seasonal service”, she highlighted, remembering that “in the summer, in the high season, there is always a lot of demand, but less in the low season. Therefore, our job is to encourage people to travel and then gradually expand”, she indicated.

“Our goal would be to provide some of these services throughout the year”, she concluded.

“Honestly, a large portion of the planes will be filled with customers traveling from Canada and outside of Canada who want to come to Portugal,” she stressed, noting that she hopes to take customers not only to Canada, but also to connect to the carrier’s network, “which is expanding to Mexico, Latin America and South America, and also to the US.”

During the presentation of the connection, which took place today in Porto, the president of Turismo do Porto e Norte, Luís Pedro Martins, spoke of the growing importance of Canadian tourists in Portugal.

“In 2024, 52% of trips abroad made by Canadian tourists will be by air,” he indicated, highlighting that 72.5% travel outside the high season.

“This is everything that a region like ours that wants to permanently combat seasonality likes to hear. For Portugal, it ranks tenth for Porto and the North and eighth with incredible growth: the market grew 19%, reaching 283 thousand overnight stays, 135 thousand guests and in the first quarter of 2025, it continues to grow, around 5.2%”.
