Iberia expands Madrid-Washington DC flights using A321XLR

Spanish carrier Iberia has resumed services between Madrid and Washington DC using new Airbus A321XLR long-haul aircraft on the route for the first time.

Iberia, which is the launch customer for the new single-aisle aircraft, restarted the Madrid-Washington Dulles route on Saturday (12 April).

The IAG-owned carrier first launched transatlantic flights using Airbus A321XLR aircraft in November 2024 on its Madrid-Boston route. Washington becomes the second US route served by the new aircraft.

The airline is expanding frequency to Washington Dulles this year with six flights per week to the US capital from April to August and then operating daily flights in September and October. Iberia will also operate the route year-round and not just as a seasonal summer service.

Iberia said using the A321XLR would allow it to “reinforce” its commitment to the US in the coming months. In total, the airline will operate 140 weekly flights between Spain and the US this summer – an increase of 14 per cent compared to summer 2024.
