The situation unfolded just five weeks after a crash involving an American Airlines aircraft on the same route, heightening attention on the airline’s operations.
According to an FBI affidavit obtained by CBS News, Asterius Rulamka, a passenger aboard American Eagle flight 5574, became disruptive as the plane approached its descent into Washington D.C. Rulamka, seated in the 14th row, allegedly stood up and made threats toward a flight attendant. Several passengers recorded the interaction, capturing the escalating tension onboard.
Court documents detail how Rulamka confronted one of the passengers filming the situation, grabbing their arms and making verbal threats. During the altercation, Rulamka reportedly struck the passenger near the left eye, causing bruising and a bloodshot injury.
Rulamka’s behavior continued as he attempted to assault another passenger. While the second individual avoided the blow, they sustained a cut finger and a broken fingernail during the altercation.
Following the incident, Rulamka was questioned by the FBI, during which he made references to President Trump. Investigators are working to understand the context of his remarks.
The disturbance occurred shortly before 9 p.m., coinciding with the time of a previous crash involving another American Airlines flight from Wichita to Washington D.C. A spokesperson for American Airlines expressed appreciation for the professionalism of the crew in handling the situation, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to safety and zero-tolerance for violence.
Court records reveal that Rulamka’s behavior escalated when he ran up and down the cabin. Flight attendants and passengers eventually restrained him in his seat until the plane landed.
Upon arrival, Rulamka reportedly claimed that he had come to Washington D.C. to meet with President Trump. When further questioned by investigators, he stated that he was “mad,” though his intentions remain unclear.
In addition, court records indicate that Rulamka had been the subject of an immigration investigation in 2014, but the proceedings are still pending.
Rulamka is currently in custody, facing federal assault charges. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, where a judge will decide whether he should remain detained pending trial. He has not entered a plea, and his attorney has not responded to requests for comment.
The FBI, which is handling the investigation, has declined to comment on the case. FBI field offices maintain liaison agents to assist with investigations of crimes aboard commercial flights, including assault and other disturbances.
