Iceland has once again been rocked by volcanic activity. A new eruption began late in the evening of November 20, 2024, when a fissure about 3 km long appeared on the Reykjanes Peninsula. This is the seventh eruption since December, highlighting the ongoing volcanic activity in the region. The eruption, which began at 11:14 pm, released red lava, although experts suggest the scale of this eruption is smaller than in August.
Local authorities have assured the public that the situation remains under control, even if the eruption is still occurring. The eruption has likely peaked and the fissure appears to have stopped growing, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office. In an early morning statement, the office said "no increase in volcanic activity is expected and activity is expected to remain stable."
"The nearest town of Grindavik, located about 50 km south, west of Reykjavik, was evacuated due to previous volcanic activity and seismic events. Fortunately, the city is not in immediate danger from the current eruption, although the region continues to face challenges due to ongoing geological instability.
Iceland is used to volcanic eruptions, even though they can be destructive. One of Iceland's most visited tourist spots, the Blue Lagoon, was temporarily closed for safety reasons and visitors were evacuated immediately after the eruption began. Despite this, planes continue to regularly fly in and out of Keflavik International Airport, which is just 20 km from the eruption site. This demonstrates Iceland's robust infrastructure and preparedness for volcanic eruptions.
Travellers are advised to stay away from the immediate eruption area, especially Grindavik and the peninsula Reykjanes, but visiting Iceland is safe. The Icelandic Meteorological Service and Safe Travel Iceland are among the Icelandic agencies providing regular updates on the situation, which is being actively monitored by authorities. In destinations that have not been affected, tourism is operating as normal and Iceland is not currently under any international travel advisories.
