Real estate group opens gorilla trekking lodge

Luxury property management company Newmark Hotels & Reserves has added Gorilla Heights Lodge in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda to its African portfolio. The lodge officially opened on November 7, marking Newmark's return to the gorilla trekking market having previously operated in the industry from a Rwandan facility.

“Having taken the time to carefully evaluate the feasibility of re-entering the gorilla trekking market gorillas, we are very excited to introduce Gorilla Heights Lodge,” said Neil Markowitz, Founder and CEO of Newmark Hotels & Reserves.

The lodge consists of 15 luxury cottages and is located at a vantage point overlooking the Virunga Mountains and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to about 20 families of mountain gorillas.

“We look forward to welcoming guests in luxury and giving them access to the exciting experiences that Bwindi Impenetrable National Park provides. This is such a special region in terms of altitude, its natural beauty and the trekking opportunities and other excursions that await you. Consequently, we expect to see huge global demand for visits to this destination,” said Markowitz.

Amenities at the lodge include a spa with steam room and sauna, Humura restaurant (designed under the direction of the chef Newmark by Chris Erasmus and band sommelier Marlvin Gweze), a bar area and several seating areas.

Nkuringo, the nearest gorilla trekking sector, is located 15 minutes walk from the lodge. Nkuringo is home to four gorilla families with a population of 48 individuals. Nearby, in the Rushaga trekking sector, there are 10 more gorilla families, and in the Mgahinga sector you can trek with golden monkeys.
