At Galápagos Conservancy, we believe in the power of community to protect the archipelago's unique ecosystems. In partnership with Silversea Cruises, we help members of Ocean Scouts Group No. 17 in the Galapagos become certified scuba divers. The initiative equips these young aquanauts with diving and underwater exploration skills, ultimately forming a local team capable of underwater ocean conservation projects.
Earning Certification The scuba diver event was a major milestone for the eleven young participants who learned basic diving techniques under the guidance of certified experts. This training allowed them to explore the extraordinary marine reserve of the Galapagos Islands, home to unique species such as sharks, manta rays, sea turtles and marine iguanas.
Community interest in this project was strong in Puerto Baquerizo- Moreno on the island of San Cristobal, where many families actively supported their children's efforts. The Scouts formed a strong connection to the ocean through coordinated dives and underwater teamwork. Experiencing the marine world first-hand fosters a sense of responsibility for the Galapagos Marine Reserve, instilling a devotion that will span generations and ensure that these young people become future stewards of the sea. As one participant remarked, inspired by his experience: “I never thought I would see a shark up close. Now I feel that it is my responsibility to protect them.”
Throughout the project, participants faced difficulties, especially in balancing training time diving with school commitments. However, teamwork has proven to be an important tool for overcoming these obstacles. One Scout proved himself to be a motivating leader, inspiring his peers to obtain and complete required certifications. The experience strengthened camaraderie among the Scouts and increased their confidence and problem-solving skills. Growing leadership abilities highlight the potential of these young people to inspire others. By taking on these responsibilities, they are preparing to become accomplished divers and passionate defenders of the Galapagos Marine Reserve.
The impact of this project goes beyond training experienced divers; it reflects the Galápagos Conservancy's commitment to preserving the Galápagos Marine Reserve and promoting sustainable development throughout the archipelago. By equipping young people with practical skills and knowledge about their marine environment, they become ambassadors for the conservation of marine biodiversity unique to their home. We are proud to support marine environmental education, and this initiative demonstrates our commitment to community engagement in protecting the ocean.
This legacy enriches the lives of young people and benefits future generations by fostering a culture of caring and respect for nature. As they continue their journey of learning and discovery, these young people embody hope for a future in which marine conservation is entrusted to those who truly understand and value it. We strive to create a community that actively participates in the protection of the Galapagos Marine Reserve, ensuring that its beauty and natural wealth are preserved for years to come.
We invite you to join us in this conservation effort. By supporting initiatives like the Ocean the Scouts diving training program, you give Galapagos youth the opportunity to help protect one of the planet's most valuable ecosystems. Together, we can ensure that the oceans of the Galapagos Islands remain a vibrant sanctuary for many unique species, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
