Kashmir hosts first women's rowing race on Dal Lake

In a historic moment for Dal Lake in Kashmir, the region held its first ever boat race for women , which brought together over 150 people who made a powerful statement about gender equality and empowerment. This pioneering event attracted significant attention in the Kashmir Valley, showcasing the passion and skill of female athletes and breaking stereotypes about women in sports. The race symbolizes a new era for women's sports in Kashmir, encouraging more inclusive events and inspiring future generations. The race was organized by Bilkis Mir, a renowned athlete from Kashmir and the first woman head of the Paris Olympics jury. Known for her dedication to empowering women in aquatics, Mir has trained many young women in Kashmir, aiming to open doors for them that are traditionally closed to women. Reflecting on the event, Mir expressed great pride, calling the day "historic." She noted: “This was the first race exclusively for women. We usually see sporting events dominated by men, be it cricket or other tournaments. For women, such opportunities are rare. These girls came out of their homes to join this race and we discovered promising new talent. We are now taking 35 girls under our wing to prepare for national and international competitions.”

Excited by the opportunity, the participants saw the race as a sign of progress for women in Kashmir. Madiha Farooq, one of the participants, shared her joy by saying, “I am very happy to be a part of this unique event in the Valley. Out of more than 100 participants, three girls became winners. I hope we see more events like this because sports are essential for girls. Those who believe that sports are not meant for women are mistaken. Our teacher, the "queen of water", inspires us all."

This event was not just a race, it served as a platform for identifying and developing new talents, and the organizers selected 35 girls for future training aimed for national and international competitions. The top three racers were given special awards and all participants received certificates and cash prizes in recognition of their contribution to this achievement.

This women's boat race on Dal Lake is a significant step towards gender equality in sports in the Kashmir Valley. As support for women athletes grows in the region, such events are expected to inspire more young girls, challenge societal norms and contribute to a more inclusive sports culture in Kashmir.
