Uttarakhand: 4 villages to be honoured with National Tourism Award this year

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recently announced that four villages from the state have been selected for the prestigious 'Best Tourist Village', which is a recognition given by the Union Ministry of Tourism.

Referring to this, The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) issued a statement saying that the initiative to make Uttarakhand a premier tourism destination is yielding positive results. If reports are to be believed, these villages will be awarded for their outstanding contribution to rural tourism on International Tourism Day during a ceremony in New Delhi.

For your information, the four villages that have been selected for this prestigious awards are Jakhol and Harshil from Uttarkashi, Seemant Gunji from Pithoragarh and Supi from Nainital. Each village was recognized for its unique tourism offerings. While Jakhol was chosen for its potential for adventure tourism, Harshil and Seemant Gunji were recognized as part of the Living Village initiative. In addition, Supi in Nainital will receive an award for the promotion of agritourism.

This annual competition is organized by the Ministry of Tourism, which includes highlighting villages that contribute to the preservation of culture and natural heritage, promote the development of social values and lifestyles, and promote economic, social and environmental sustainability. By awarding these villages, the Ministry aims to highlight those places that embody sustainable tourism practices.

Chief Minister Dhami lauded the efforts of the villagers and congratulated them for their achievement. He emphasized the need for public participation, which is crucial for the development of Uttarakhand as a tourism state. Although the government has implemented numerous programs to promote tourism, the Chief Minister believes that success can only be achieved with the support of the people.

Uttarakhand, often called "Devbhoomi" or the land of the gods, is located in the Himalayas and is divided into two main regions: Garhwal and Kumaon. The state government continues to promote tourism by launching various policies and programs to attract visitors.

As reported earlier, last year, Bishwanath Ghat village in Sonitpur district of Assam won the award for the best tourist village in India and has become an example for other villages in developing sustainable tourism.
