Bhutan open to unlimited number of tourists, tourism chief confirms

According to recent news reports, the number of visitors to Bhutan will not be limited. Bhutan Tourism Marketing Director Carissa Nimah assured this and allayed any concerns regarding limiting the number of visitors. As international tourism continues to grow, with the opening of borders, Bhutan is committed to its "high value, low impact" tourism model ideology.


The official also stated that Bhutan is not a mass tourism destination, but rather a destination that serves dear guests. Their goal is to attract a large number of high-end tourists who want to enjoy the country's unique offerings. This ensures that every traveler receives a high-quality, authentic experience, while also preserving Bhutan's environment and cultural heritage.


Bhutan previously introduced a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), which requires the visitor to pay US$100 or INR 1,200 for Indian visitors, helping the destination achieve its sustainability goals. Although there is an expense associated with visiting this destination, reports say that tourism in Bhutan continues to flourish, especially as ecotourism gains popularity around the world. Nimah dispelled the myth that Bhutan has a limit on the number of visitors, citing 2019, when about 350,000 people visited the country, as an example of the government's ability to manage large influxes of tourists.


In this This year marks 50 years since Bhutan opened its borders to international tourism. Since 1974, the country has welcomed travelers who want to discover its unique spiritual, cultural and natural resources. Although the sector accounts for less than 5% of Bhutan's GDP, it plays an important role in its development. Nimah also emphasized Bhutan's goal of attracting repeat visitors, adding that many people consider Bhutan a "bucket list" destination ”, visiting it once and never returning. She advised visitors not to limit themselves to popular destinations such as Paro, Thimphu and Punakha as Bhutan has much more to offer.
