Ethiopian Airlines leaves Eritrea

Ethiopian Airlines recently announced that it will no longer operate flights to Asmara, Eritrea.

As of September 3, the airline will no longer offer flights to the Eritrean capital due to “very difficult operating conditions, with encountered in Eritrea and which are beyond its control," according to the airline's statement.

Ethiopian Airlines said it would make every effort to rebook affected passengers on other airlines at no additional cost or, as a result, alternatively, provide a full refund for tickets booked and paid for.

The airline's CEO Mesfin Taseu said at a press conference that the Civil Aviation Authority of Eritrea has frozen Ethiopian Airlines' bank account.

According to Reuters, the Eritrean government previously threatened to suspend Ethiopian Airlines flights by the end of September.

Flights between the two countries resumed in 2018 after being suspended 20 years ago. Relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea have been cool and increasingly hostile since a 30-year conflict that ended with a 2018 peace deal.
