The new season of the YOUNG Theater will present two drama productions

YOUNG Theater has announced its fall/winter season of performances, presenting 34 works in nearly 100 productions through January 2025.

The new season consists of two main parts - the international drama season “Autumn Is” "and the youth drama show GOAT (Greatest Of All Time).

The international drama season will feature eight productions by troupes from six countries. Akram Khan's The Jungle Book Reimagined opens October 12.

Based on the story by Nobel Prize-winning author Rudyard Kipling, Mowgli's journey is seen through the eyes of a refugee caught in a world devastated by climate change.

German theater company Schaubühne returns to Shanghai after six years with Hamlet (November 1–3) and Every Woman (November 8–10), co-created by Swiss theater director Milo Rau and a Swiss actress Ursina Lardi.

Brazilian theater company Armazém also returns to the theater with “Brás Cubas” October 25-27.

YOUNG Theater's youth drama exhibition GOAT mainly is dedicated to cutting-edge and innovative stage work by young creators.

This year's exhibition, which begins on September 6, will present four works in the theatre's 168-seat Green Box. There will also be script reading events and drama forums next month.

Dramas and plays are a strong suit for the theatre, which opened in 2022. Over the past two years, about 70 percent of its programming has been drama, with the remainder covering music, opera, dance and other genres.

As its name suggests, the theater attracts a relatively young audience, about 64 percent of who were born after 1990.

“Youth is not limited by age, but by thinking pattern and acting,” said Wang Jie, general manager of YOUNG Theater.

In addition to continuing to present high-quality and innovative productions, Wang said the theater has reached a three-year collaboration with Fudan University's School of Philosophy to organize an open lecture series integrating drama, philosophy and education.
