Chinese Xinjiang opens direct flight to Armenia

A direct air route connecting Urumqi, the capital of northwestern China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, with the Armenian capital Yerevan, opened on Tuesday. This is China's first direct flight to Armenia, a country increasingly recognized as a popular travel destination.

The flight, operated by China Southern Airlines, operates every Tuesday and Saturday, with a flight duration of about five hours.

Armenia introduced a visa-free regime for Chinese citizens, which attracted many Chinese tourists on the opening day of the new route. Chinese traveler Chen Xi said: “The timing was perfect - after flying from Urumqi, we arrived in Yerevan just in time for dinner. The flight schedule is convenient for family trips.”

With the opening of the route, China has full air connections with three countries in the Caucasus region: Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, which expands opportunities for tourism, cultural exchange and trade cooperation, according to the airline.
