Shanghai exhibition delves into Lucifer's shifting identities

Shanghai Spaces and Galleries Association (SGA) presented the exhibition Everyone is Lucifer, an exploration of duality and transformation through the works of five contemporary Chinese artists: Liu Chao, Lu Pingyuan, Wang Shuo, Zhao Yang and Zheng Haozhong.

Against the historical elegance of Three on the Quay, the exhibition delves into the fluid identities of Lucifer—not just as the fallen angel of lore, but as a metaphor for the human condition, where each person embodies both an angelic and a demonic essence.

Zhao's artistic style is characterized by a fusion of reality and fantasy, often drawing heavily on literary influences to create scenes that mix children's fairy tales with gritty, mature themes.

In his works typically feature exaggerated and abstract figures set in vibrant, surreal landscapes that challenge conventional perspectives. This narrative approach imbues his paintings with a deep sense of melancholy, rebellion and contemplation.

Zheng's artistic output reflects his multi-faceted experience as an artist, musician and writer, contributing to a style that is fluid, non-academic and deeply personal .

His writing style, often free and casual, allows for intimate but unstructured portrayals of his characters, emphasizing the inherent ease that defines his approach. In his works, Zheng deliberately leaves empty spaces - spaces that invite the viewer to imagine the canvas, echoing the unfinished stories of the fable.
