Have you ever heard the singing of whales? This incredible soundscape inspired creative writer Selena Loaiza to create a project that will transform the way children interact with nature. As the recipient of a grant from our Women in Sustainable Entrepreneurship (WISE) program, Selena's initiative combines art and science to improve children's understanding and appreciation of our natural marine world, striving to promote conservation and inspiring the next generation of conservationists.
“Sounds of the Sea” is more than just a book; it is an invitation to explore, dream and care for our planet. This unique initiative combines vibrant illustrations, poetic lyrics and access to real ocean sounds via a QR code printed on every page and linked to an online sound source. Together they create a deeply immersive experience, transporting children to a magical world full of life, where they will discover fascinating animals and develop a deep connection with nature.
From the first page they are off on an underwater adventure - listening to the splashes of penguins, the calls of dolphins, the roar of sea lions and the songs of whales - fostering a sense of belonging to the beautiful Galapagos Islands. To date, 800 of these “sound books” have been distributed to rural schools on the islands of Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Isabela and Floreana, prioritizing reading and fostering a sense of care and conservation.
The books were distributed in conjunction with reading mediation, a process that involves guided reading activities designed to engage children's imagination and stimulate learning. This initiative has been very effective in stimulating children's interest in reading and increasing their knowledge of the biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands. “By teaching children to care about the environment, we are creating environmental ambassadors who will influence their families and promote sustainable practices,” says Jenny Macias, our educational consultant.
At Galápagos Conservancy We are committed to the conservation and sustainable development of the Galapagos archipelago. It is a privilege to collaborate on such projects. Thanks to our financial support, many children now have access to a book that invites them to explore the beautiful marine biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands. We are filled with satisfaction seeing the joy on their faces when they receive these books and are motivated to continue working to preserve this unique archipelago. Let's plant the seeds today for a sustainable tomorrow!
