The proposed reduction of flights at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport was rejected by the Dutch Supreme Court because it did not comply with a balanced approach to noise management.
“We welcome this decision of the Supreme Court, which confirms the original decision of the Amsterdam District Court on that the unilateral reduction in the number of flights at Schiphol was unlawful and the overturning decision of the Court of Appeal,” said Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA.
In 2023, the District Court of North Holland ruled that the government had not followed the correct procedure regarding the pilot flight restriction at Schiphol Airport.
However, the Dutch government, having agreed with the demand of the Amsterdam city council for a further reduction of flights by 20%, appealed and received permission to reduce the number of flights at Schiphole in early July, reports reuters.com.
Walsh emphasized how a balanced approach can protect national and regional growth in aviation and air travel while helping to reduce noise pollution for residents surrounding the airport. p>
“We expect the new Dutch government to respect today’s decision and continue to take a balanced approach, which is also enshrined in EU law and international treaties, with the utmost caution in relation to Schiphol,” Walsh said.
