Delta extends flight outages after cyber outage

Delta Air Lines is struggling to restore normal operations following a global cyber outage on July 19. The airline subsequently extended the cancellation for all customers with travel booked for July 19-21.

The US carrier canceled 1,250 flights on Sunday (July 21), on top of the 3,500 it had already canceled when the outage occurred July 19, Reuters reports.

Delta has not offered any timetable for resuming normal operations and by Sunday had already canceled another 305 flights for Monday, July 22, according to flight tracking site FlightAware.

The U.S. carrier's total number of canceled flights since Friday now stands at more than 5,000.

The airline's cancellation of expanded travel gives customers a one-time opportunity to change their itinerary. Customer fare differences will be waived if the rebooked flight occurs on or before July 26 in the same cabin as the original booked.

Alternatively, Delta will issue SkyMiles or a travel voucher in an amount based on the customer's travel impact.

The airline will also cover eligible expenses resulting from this in-flight disruption such as meal vouchers and hotel accommodations, if available, as well as ground transportation provided to affected customers.

Customers who incurred expenses for lodging, meals or ground transportation while in transit during this service disruption may apply for reimbursement of eligible expenses. However, Delta will not refund prepaid expenses, including, but not limited to, hotel reservations in a customer's destination, vacations, lost wages, concerts or other tickets.

Additionally, customers whose trip was interrupted by -for flight cancellations or significant delays, may cancel the trip and receive an electronic credit for the unfulfilled portion of the trip, or instead request a refund at delta.com/refund.

The airline added that it is notifying customers about delays and cancellations of their itineraries via the Fly Delta app and text messages. The company says it offers rebooking options that can be managed online.

“While customers can track and manage their itineraries on Delta.com or the Fly Delta app, these online tools are overwhelmed with traffic , which leads to intermittent performance issues. Delta teams are working to stabilize these instruments. Please also note that our ability to respond to service messages on social networks such as X is limited,” the airline warned in a press release.
