Somalia has unveiled plans to build a new airport in the Habaai region, just 35 km from Mogadishu. The airport is expected to become a large-scale international facility and will reportedly be called "Mogadishu New Airport", reports national.africa.

Somalia's Ministry of Transport says the construction of the airport is a strategic decision due to significant growth in outbound and inbound air traffic and growing demand for international access.

Somalia recently joined the East African bloc, providing access to eight regional markets - Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic Congo and South Sudan.
