Malaysia and China have joined forces to nominate a lion dance for inclusion on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The decision was made following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the tourism sector and the Cultural Exchange Executive Program for 2024-2029. The agreement was finalized during Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang's official visit to Malaysia.


According to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MoTAC), both countries also formalized Malaysia's membership in the Cultural Heritage Alliance in Asia. The event was marked by a special musical and theatrical performance of "Hang Li Po" by the Traditional Malaysia Orchestra at Istana Budaya with the participation of musicians from China.


The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Eugene in the presence of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and PM Lee. MoTAC stressed that this agreement aims to enhance cooperation between Malaysia and China in the areas of tourism development, air connectivity between major tourist destinations, business tourism, and promotion of community and ecotourism initiatives.


It The collaboration marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China, highlighting mutual efforts in tourism and cultural development. Minister Tiong previously expected a significant increase in the number of tourists from China and India in 2024, supported by Malaysia's recently introduced 30-day visa waiver starting December 1, 2023.


As of On 15 November 2023, 26 million foreign visitors visited Malaysia, with notable contributions from China (1.47 million) and India (780,532).
