Greek islands impose restrictions on cruise ships

Greece plans to limit the number of cruise ships visiting its islands to combat overtourism.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the restrictions would likely come into force next year year, reports Bloomberg.

He said Santorini and Mykonos have been hit hardest by overtourism, adding that tourists on cruise ships are crowding out other tourists who are spending more money on the islands by booking accommodation.

“There are people who spend a lot of money to live in Santorini, and they don't want the island to be filled with crowds. Plus the island cannot afford it, even from a security point of view,” Mitsotakis said.

He said the number of cruise ships allowed to enter each port at one time would be limited. More specific details have not yet been announced.
