The Cherry Festival is a popular Bulgarian holiday celebrating the country's rich and fruitful bounty. This festival, first held in Kyustendil in 1896, brought the city the title of the Motherland of Bulgarian agriculture.
Since then, every year in June a festival is held in the city and the beginning of the cherry picking season is announced. Here, in the heart of Bulgaria's garden, you can taste more than 80 varieties of cherries of different varieties and flavors. Vendors are scattered throughout the city garden of Kyustendil with tables decorated with fresh cherries and handmade cherry decorations, as well as homemade cherry products.
This is more than a food festival, this event involves everyone community. Residents of Kyustendil and surrounding villages create various new inventions from cherries and demonstrate them at the festival. For example, a couple of years ago, a local community center invented rocket fuel made entirely from cherry pits.
Like many other Bulgarian festivals, the Cherry Festival holds a number of competitions, such as for the most beautiful table setting and for the juiciest cherries. If you are a fan of these bright berries, you cannot miss this event!
