Smog is choking Nepal's tourism

Since March, one of the main tourist destinations of Nepal, Pokhara, has been shrouded in a thick haze of smog, which has a negative impact on tourism industries in the country.

According to, an international company that monitors air pollution, air quality in Pokhara reached “unhealthy” levels on Tuesday, April 30, with an AQI reading of 199 .

In addition to the pollution affecting air quality, there was a forest fire in the Taprang forest, just 27 km from Pokhara. The factors culminate in the impact on villages including Sikles, Kaski and Tangting, which are popular among tourists for their views of the Annapurna mountain range and exciting cultural experiences.

Other tourist attractions in the region were also affected: Mt. Machhapuchhre, Phewa Lake and Pokhara Bazaar.

Paras Gurung, president of the Sikles Hotel Management Committee, said the growing forest fire has worsened the tourism situation in the village.

Tourism and hospitality businesses are reporting that tourists are leaving early, leaving the area during the busiest tourist season.

Pomnarayan Shrestha, president of the Pokhara Tourism Board, said that if the government does not take action soon , pollution could have serious consequences for the region's growing tourism industry, reports
