In a survey of its loyal customers, Cathay Pacific asked passengers whether they would be willing to have their own cutlery on business class flights.
Cathay is exploring unconventional initiatives to improve its sustainability. The airline proposed green initiatives for business class passengers in a questionnaire addressed to loyalty program customers on the Cathay Lab platform.
Passengers were asked if they would be willing to provide their own cutlery for meals. The carrier also asked passengers whether they were willing to actively collect and discard plastic water bottles for recycling upon exiting the plane and return them to flight attendants before landing, or whether they were willing to bring their own water bottles.
Purpose The study is to measure passengers' receptivity to these unconventional environmental initiatives. However, it is unlikely that this initiative will be implemented without opposition. For example, in South Africa, Acsa does not allow passengers to bring stainless steel cutlery through security.
