St Helena prepares for iconic yacht race

The yacht race from Cape to Saint Helena, a challenging 3,060 km journey across the South Atlantic, starts December 26.


The event offers a unique challenge and opportunity to reach one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world. Participants must submit their entry by November 1.


The yacht race, originally known as the Governor's Cup, has a rich history dating back to 1996. Inspired by the Cape to Rio sailing in 1996, former RMS St Helena captain David Roberts conceived the idea of ​​a race to the remote British Overseas Territory.


The first race in 1996 had 13 entries, and the second in 1998 A record 22 participants were registered this year. The 2020 race was postponed due to the pandemic, but the success of the 2022 event has increased anticipation for the upcoming race.


In the 2022 race, the yachts battled rough weather, heavy rain, strong winds and choppy seas. Despite the challenges, the shared experience strengthened the bonds between the racers.


David Garrard, Vice Commodore of the Royal Cape Yacht Club, says: “We are thrilled to be part of this incredible event. With only nine months left, we are working closely with St Helena Tourism to organize this iconic yacht race. We look forward to a good fleet and the opportunity to share this amazing event with the world."


Beyond the excitement of the race, St Helena invites visitors to discover its fascinating past and enjoy the wonders of nature.

Travelers can explore historic sites, from Napoleon's exiled residence at Longwood House to the island's legacy as a British overseas territory. They can also climb to the top of Diana Peak for panoramic views, discover the island's unique plants and birds, and enjoy marine and adventure activities.

Airlink offers weekly flights from Johannesburg to St Helena, and a seasonal flight from Cape Town will be added from December to March 2025.
