Bulgaria and Romania will officially join to the Schengen area for arrivals by air from March 31.
However, Austria maintained its position on the inclusion of these countries by land and did not allow the opening of its land borders.
“Membership of the Schengen area means that those legally present in member countries can move freely without passport control. However, the membership of Romania and Bulgaria is exclusive - the abolition of passport controls applies only to air and sea transport,” said the Finnish authorities in Romania.
This means that passport controls applied to air and sea transport between Bulgaria and Romania and other Schengen countries will be cancelled. Bulgaria and Romania will begin issuing Schengen C visas from April 1.
