Tropical Storm Filipo approaches landfall

A low pressure system between Madagascar and mainland southern Africa, which has strengthened into a moderate tropical storm, has made landfall.

“The storm is expected to affect mainly the southern parts of Mozambique, but some of its effects will also be felt in the extreme north eastern parts of South Africa," the South African Weather Service (SAWS) said in a press release.

SAWS says much of Mozambique's southern coast faces a high risk of weather-related damage, including as a result of a combination of heavy rainfall, strong damaging winds (with wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h), and storm surges close to the coastline.

Meanwhile, modeling estimates from the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) at Reunion showed that storm surge is likely to raise local sea levels by as much as 50 cm (half a meter), especially along the coastline stretching from Beira south to Vilanculos.

According to a Relief Web press release , issued on March 12, Filipo will continue to move inland through southern Mozambique, parts of South Africa and Eswatini, with heavy rain and strong winds expected over the next 72 hours.
