Iftar is included in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage

The UN cultural agency has officially recognized iftar, the evening meal Muslims eat to break their daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan, and added it to its list of intangible cultural heritage.

If reports are to be believed, a joint proposal for this socio-cultural tradition was submitted to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization by Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan .

Iftar, also known as eftari or iftor, is a practice observed by Muslims at sunset during the month of Ramadan, after completing all religious and ceremonial duties, according to UNESCO. This tradition is closely related to the call to prayer at sunset during Ramadan and is known for promoting gatherings that strengthen family and community ties, as well as promoting values such as charity, solidarity and social exchange.

The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which met in Botswana on Monday, officially recognized this age-old social practice.

In various Muslim countries, it is customary to start iftar by eating dates along with tea, although recipes and baked goods associated with Iftar vary greatly from country to country.

UNESCO highlighted that the transmission of Iftar practices usually occurs within families, where children and youth often take responsibility for preparing components of traditional dishes.

In addition to iftar, Italian opera singing is included in the UNESCO list of intangible world heritage - an art transmitted exclusively orally from teacher to student. This art form, which attracts students from all over the world, has received official recognition: Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano expressed pride in recognizing opera singing as an outstanding world achievement.

Italian opera, which originated in Italy, Verdi's homeland and Scarlatti, has historical significance: it is sung by patriots, and some of the world's most famous arias come from the peninsula.

UNESCO has described Italian opera singing as a physiologically controlled method, which enhances the carrying power of the voice in acoustic spaces such as amphitheaters and churches.
