In an effort to boost tourism in the country, Bhutan has announced plans to reduce “expensive” airfares for visitors traveling to the country. According to the country's finance minister, the move will lead to an increase in the number of travelers to the country and an increase in the number of visitors visiting the country. It has reportedly been found that expensive airfare is one of the main reasons why travelers avoid traveling to Bhutan.
In addition to this, the government has introduced a number of incentives such as a reduction in the sustainability fee ( SDF) from $200 to $100 per person each night.
Other plans include allowing budget hotels to accommodate tourists and creating other programs to encourage long-term stays. The government is currently taking steps to encourage travelers by considering lowering prices. The government is planning to work with Drukair Corporation and Bhutan Airlines to reduce the cost of air tickets for tourists. This is part of the government's incentive, given that tourists complain about expensive airfares, added Finance Minister Namgay Tshering. However, other lawmakers believe that the SDF's frequent policy changes are not an ideal strategy for developing the tourism sector.
In an effort to revitalize its tourism industry, Bhutan is embarking on a strategic plan to make travel to the country more affordable and attractive to visitors.
The Finance Minister stressed that this move will lead to a significant influx of travelers and an increase in the total number of visitors to Bhutan. It is a well-known fact that "expensive" airline tickets often deter potential travelers from choosing Bhutan as their destination.
It is worth noting, however, that not all legislators strongly agree with the frequent changes in the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) policy as some believe there may be alternative strategies to stimulate growth in the tourism sector that should be explored.
