1. Mikulov: the oldest pilgrimage site in the Czech Republic, with the country's largest wine exhibition

South Moravia is famous for its traditions as a wine region. And Mikulov is no exception. This picturesque town, located among fertile vineyards, boasts the largest exhibition of viticulture in the entire Czech Republic. Its dominant landmark is Holly Hill, formerly known as Dancing Mountain. Legend has it that on Walpurgis Night, witches frolicked all night long and held pagan dance ceremonies there.


It is therefore not surprising that during the period of Catholicization it became a place of pilgrimage and is in fact the oldest in the whole of the Czech Republic. The Stations of the Cross lead to the top of this hill, which offers stunning views of the surrounding area, ending at the pilgrimage church of St. Sebastian.

Also worth visiting is the local castle, Dietrichstein's tomb and the historic Jewish quarter. Not far from the city is Palava, a protected landscape area where you can admire stunning scenery.

How to get there

It is a 50-minute drive from Brno along the E461 highway. There are direct buses from Brno several times an hour, always from the Zvonaržka bus station in the city center. The journey takes about 90 minutes.

2. Znojmo: mysterious catacombs and rich wine cellars

This royal city, whose history dates back to the 13th century, has a wealth of cultural heritage to offer. The biggest tourist attraction is the Znojmo catacombs. This 30 km long crossing system is one of the largest in Central Europe. In the Middle Ages, Znojmo was considered the most fortified place between Prague and Vienna. The fortifications included Znojmo Castle, which can be explored on one of the regular excursions.


Not far from the castle is Enoteka, the largest tasting room in the Czech Republic. There are 120 samples to choose from from local winemakers. After all, wine and Znojmo are inextricably linked with each other. Every September the town hosts the traditional Znojmo Wine Festival with many cultural events, attracting thousands of visitors from the Czech Republic and abroad to celebrate the grape harvest.


How to get there

The journey from Brno by car takes 50 minutes; The bus ride takes about an hour, buses depart from Zvonarzka station.

3. Vranov nad Dyji: a European Baroque gem set in unspoiled countryside

While exploring the surroundings of Brno, you should definitely visit one of the most beautiful places in South Moravia – Vranov nad Dyji! This small town boasts a monumental Baroque castle perched on an 80m high cliff, a pilgrimage church and a natural beach.


After you've seen all the sights, we recommend taking the small tourist train and head out of town to explore the nearby Vranov Dam. This relaxation area is extremely popular due to its excellent facilities and great atmosphere. While you're there, you can try your hand at pedal boating, water slides, zorbing, bungee jumping or water football - whatever takes your fancy. And don't miss the cruises!


How to get there

The road from Brno to Vranov nad Dyji by car takes about an hour. The bus ride from the Zvonaržka bus station takes approximately 2 hours, changing in Znojmo.

4. Kromeriz: enjoy romance among UNESCO gardens

In the Czech Republic you cannot find a more romantic trip than a tour of the Archbishop's Palace with a walk through the Castle Garden and Flower Garden. The magnificent interiors of the palace house a collection of works of art that is one of the best in Europe. It includes works by some of Europe's most famous artists, such as Titian and Van Dyck.


And the Castle Garden combined with the Flower Garden? You won't find anything more romantic than this! You can enjoy a stroll through the Versailles-inspired garden or the English-style park, which is made even more beautiful by its colonnade, sculptures, fountains, labyrinths and greenhouses. The rotunda-style pavilion dominates, and the peacocks and swans roaming the grounds add to the fairy-tale atmosphere. This makes Kroměříž an ideal destination for anyone who loves romance and history!


How to get there

It takes less than an hour. The best alternative to a car is to take a bus departing from the Zvonarzka bus station or from the Grand Hotel.

5. Slavkov u Brna: site of Napoleon’s triumphant battle in which he wiped out the Holy Roman Empire from the face of the earth

Walk through one of the largest castle parks in the Czech Republic and remember the historical Battle of the Three Emperors, which marked the fall of the Holy Roman Empire. A visit to Slavkov u Brna (Austerlitz) is a must for any history and combat lover! In 1805, the famous Battle of the Three Emperors took place nearby, where Napoleon Bonaparte celebrated his most glorious victory. His triumph over the emperors of Austria and Russia is marked by the Cairn of Peace. In the local castle you can see the famous balcony from which Napoleon made his victory speech.


How to get there

It is a 20-kilometer drive from Brno in the east direction on the D1 motorway. If you want to get from Brno to Slavkov by public transport, you can go by train or bus. By train from Brno Central Station you will be in Slavkov in just half an hour. The bus ride from the Zvonarzka bus station will be just as long.
