What was once a modest island settlement (apparently discovered by a roaming antelope) has now become a bustling cosmopolitan city. Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, is a fascinating archipelago made up of more than 200 islands, many of which are accessible to visitors. Known as one of the earliest human settlements in the UAE, Dalma Island is an important historical pearling island. Take a ferry from Mars Jebel Al Dhanna port to reach the island. An interesting place to visit is the fortified house of the pearl merchant Mohammed bin Jassim Al Meraihi. It is believed to have been built from beach stone and coral around 1931.
