Dive into the depths of Brno's dungeons

Czech Republic, Brno
Explore the underbelly of the Moravian capital

The second largest Czech city hides many mysteries. Especially the stories about the Brno underground would take up a whole book... What happened inside the legendary Špilberk hill, where the Nazis also operated? What are the “residents” of the second largest crypt in Europe hiding? Why were the winding streets of the mysterious dungeon under the main square created? There is only one thing left to do: go to the Brno dungeon and get to the bottom of the secrets!

Become the Lord of the Rings

If you're a fan of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, you've probably dreamed of visiting the very center of Mordor. In Brno you can get closer to this dream. Just visit the historical cisterns inside Žluta Kopec. You will find yourself in another world, a bit like a computer game, in underground halls that may remind you of the mysterious Erebatan Cistern in Istanbul... It is not for nothing that this technical landmark has become one of the most popular attractions in Brno.

The largest after Paris

No less mysterious are the eerie spaces under Jacob Square. However, don't expect to see spacious underground cathedrals like the ones inside Žluta Kopets. You will find yourself surrounded by the remains of thousands of people in the second largest crypt in Europe, the first of which is in Paris!

Look inside a medieval refrigerator

Trip to the center of Brno. The labyrinth of passages and cellars, located up to eight meters below the pavement of Brno's most famous square, the Cabbage Market, will take you back to the Middle Ages, when cool cellars were used instead of today's refrigerators. The tour will take you to the oldest cellars in Brno!

Secret witnesses to the history of Brno

You can also see former cisterns at Špilberk, a castle overlooking Brno. They used to supply the residents of Brno with water, but today they “supply” visitors with works of art. Admire original stone sculptures, tombstones and decorations from all over Brno in this underground stone collection, protected from the elements.

Shelter behind the Iron Curtain

The original air raid shelter was dug into Špilberk Hill during World War II to protect people during American and Soviet bombing raids. The communists turned it into a bomb shelter for the elite. Fortunately, the shelter was never used and today you have the opportunity to explore it yourself. If you have nerves of steel, be sure to try night tours of the technical rooms of the shelter!

Mummies with private air conditioning

On the picturesque Capuchin Square in the center of Brno is the Capuchin Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross, under which there is a tomb where about two hundred monks and patrons of the 17th and 18th centuries are buried. However, these are no ordinary remains. The complex ventilation system, thanks to which the crypt was ventilated over the centuries, led to the natural mummification of the bodies. There are also several original painted coffins in the Baroque style preserved here.
