Fans of folklore and fun will be in for a treat this Halloween as the Puka Festival returns, running from Friday, October 28th to Monday, October 31st, 2022.

Celebrating Ireland as the birthplace of Halloween, Pooka is an authentic, exciting and otherworldly festival. Bright, fun and modern in feel, but deeply rooted in tradition, Púca will take place at the Trim and Athboy festival centers in County Meath.

Working in partnership with Irish artists, Seanchai storytellers and the local community, Pooka will showcase the best of contemporary Irish music, pageantry and performance over three days and four nights in Ireland's Ancient East.

In Irish and Celtic traditions, Samhain is the end of the harvest season, when all the harvest is gathered and stored for the "New Year". Historically, it was a time of celebration involving bonfires, harvest feeding, music, gathering, and storytelling. A familiar character in Irish Halloween lore, Pooka (pronounced pooh-kuh) is a werewolf character from Celtic folklore who comes to life on the ancient New Year to stalk the night and change the fate of those who cross it.

Four supernatural evenings of music, comedy and Halloween performances will take place in the historic town of Trim and its stunning castle grounds, including Arrival of the Spirits on Saturday 29 October to officially open the festival.

Ward's Hill near Athboy is an important prehistoric site and the center of Halloween traditions. On Monday, October 31st, the Coming of Samhain celebration will take place in this main ceremonial room, which was one of the first sites where Samhain took place. It will be a spiritual and historical retelling of the original Halloween story, where the five ancient provinces of Ireland will be represented and symbolically reunited in flames.

Other highlights of the festival include high-profile contemporary acts in music, comedy and performance art. They will collude on four stages in Trim and Athboy, named after the Goddess Boyne, Boann the Goddess of War, Morrigan the Fairy of Mischief, Fear Dearg and of course the main Pookie Stage to entertain fans of folklore and legend.

As Samhain historically marked the end of the harvest season, the Puka Festival brings together the great wealth and quality of local produce right on the doorstep of the Boyne Valley. There will be an opportunity to enjoy traditional barm brak, colcannon, baked apples and other local seasonal treats.

And immersive games and storytelling, including Banshee Bingo Hall, comedy witch trials, interactive werewolf games, self-guided treasure hunts and traditional awards ceremonies will help visitors get into the spirit of the festival.

Don't miss this weekend of music, myth, food, folklore, fire, feasting and fun in the land where Halloween began.
