Lesotho in April–May: a mountain kingdom without crowds and with real Africa

Lesotho
A country where spring is perfect for trekking, waterfalls, and high-altitude travel.

Lesotho is one of the most unusual countries in the world: it is entirely surrounded by South Africa and sits above 1,000 meters. In April–May, the dry season begins: the air becomes clear, green hills slowly turn golden, and tourist numbers stay low. It’s a chance to experience Africa beyond safari clichés — with mountain villages, local shepherd culture, and raw landscapes.

Why go in spring

April and May mark the transition from rainy summer to cool, dry winter. Rainfall drops, rivers are still full, and skies are mostly clear. Temperatures are comfortable: around +15 to +22 °C during the day, cooler at night. It’s the best balance between heat and cold. Landscapes are especially photogenic, with a mix of greenery and dry textures.

Maletsunyane Falls — the highlight

Maletsunyane Falls is one of Africa’s highest single-drop waterfalls (about 192 m). In spring, it’s at its most powerful after the rainy season. Nearby Semonkong serves as a base. Visitors can hike down to the falls or even try abseiling. Access can be challenging, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended.

Mountain passes and epic drives

Lesotho is all about mountain roads. The most famous is Sani Pass, connecting the country with South Africa. It’s one of the most dramatic drives in the region, with steep turns and stunning views. At the top, there’s one of the highest pubs in Africa. Spring conditions are safer than winter, but still require caution.

High-altitude life and culture

The Basotho people live in remote mountain villages, often without paved roads. Traditional blankets, straw hats, and pony transport are part of daily life, not a show for tourists. Spring makes these areas more accessible, offering a genuine cultural experience without seasonal limitations.

Trekking without crowds

Lesotho is perfect for hiking. Trails cross plateaus, valleys, and grazing lands. Unlike popular trekking destinations, you’ll rarely encounter other travelers. Spring offers ideal conditions: no heavy mud and no winter cold. Be prepared for altitude, as many routes reach 2,000–3,000 meters.

Practical tips

Traveling in Lesotho requires preparation. Infrastructure is limited, roads are often rough, and internet access is unreliable. Cash is essential. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to basic lodges. Weather can change quickly, so warm clothing is necessary — even in April.
