Kamchatka is one of the most mysterious and picturesque corners of Russia, where nature shows its power in all its glory. This is a peninsula that amazes with its scale and contrasts from the very first minutes: here, in the endless silence, dozens of volcanoes smoke, geysers roar, and in thermal springs among the snow, you can forget about civilization. More than a third of all Russian volcanoes are located here, and many of them continue to erupt, forming a new landscape right before your eyes.
Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano is the highest active volcano in Eurasia, rising almost five kilometers. Like an ancient guard, it watches Kamchatka from above, hiding its summit in the clouds. In the south of the peninsula are the Gorely and Mutnovsky volcanoes, to which popular trekking routes lead. Gorely attracts with its acidic lakes and smoking craters, and Mutnovsky impresses with ice caves and fumarole fields, which create the feeling of being on another planet.
One of the most fascinating places on the peninsula is the Valley of Geysers. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the largest geyser fields in the world. It is only accessible by air: a helicopter flight from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is a highlight of the trip, with breathtaking views of volcanoes, glaciers and turquoise lakes from above. Arriving in the Valley, it seems as if the earth here is alive - steam bursts out from under the ground, geysers gush for tens of meters, and the air is filled with the smell of sulfur and humidity.
Kamchatka is also famous for its hot springs, and this is an integral part of the local travel culture. Natural thermal baths can be found both at tourist centers and in wild places, where you can bathe in hot water in the open air, surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The springs in the Paratunka area are especially popular, where hot water comes to the surface from a depth of more than a kilometer. An even more unique place is the Khodutkinskiye Springs, located among the forests, which can only be reached by all-terrain vehicles or a helicopter.
The ocean part of Kamchatka is no less impressive. The Pacific coast, in particular Avacha Bay, is one of the best places for boat trips. The waters off the coast are inhabited by killer whales, whales, sea lions and many seabirds. In the summer, boat excursions are organized that allow you not only to see the marine fauna, but also to approach the basalt cliffs, picturesque capes and steep banks. Particularly spectacular are Russkaya Bay and Cape Kekurny, where you can often see sea otters and seagulls circling above the waves.
