From dramatic limestone cliffs that plunge into the deep blue sea to secluded coves that paint the sky with vibrant hues at dusk, here are some top-notch sunset spots handpicked by We Seek Malta travel expert Ollie Gaspar, who has extensively researched and photographed our islands.< /p>

Dingli Cliffs

Located on the highest point on Malta's west coast, Dingli Cliffs rise more than 250 meters above the Mediterranean Sea, offering perhaps the best location for sunset in Malta. These natural fortifications are aptly named after Sir Thomas Dingley, an English knight of the Order of St John, renowned for strengthening the country's defenses against pirates and invaders.

Just 30 minutes' drive from Valletta , is an affordable day trip where the Maltese sun melts into the horizon, illuminating the majestic island of Filfla. If you're keeping score, standing on the highest point of the archipelago you'll enjoy the last rays of the day a fraction of a second longer than the rest of Malta.

Chapel of the Immaculate Conception - L-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa

In the 19th century, a violent storm claimed the life of one fisherman but spared another, a story of loss and survival immortalized in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. Rebuilt away from the crumbling cliffs, this tranquil spot now offers a quiet place to watch the sun set on the horizon and reflect on nature's great cycles of renewal and resilience.

Situated on a quiet headland in Mellieha, this tiny chapel is a world away from the grand Baroque cathedrals. Here you will find a small but intricate altar surrounded by stunning views of the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Easily accessible from Mellieha, you can enjoy Malta's natural beauty in peace before indulging in sumptuous food and refreshing cocktails on Mellieha's vibrant seaside promenades.

Ta'Chench Rocks in Gozo

For a taste of wild beauty, head to Gozo, Malta's idyllic neighbor island. Here the Ta'Chench cliffs rise like ancient giants along the southern coast. Their rugged limestone forms plunge sharply into the sea, creating a spectacular setting for a sunset away from the crowds. The cliffs themselves reach a height of over 150 meters, making them the highest point of the island.

During the golden hour, these cliffs turn into a canvas of fiery orange, dark red and warm purple tones against the backdrop of the endless blue of the Mediterranean Sea. With its privacy, close access to bird-filled hiking trails, and a dramatic cliff-top location, sunset at Ta' Chench offers the perfect combination of afternoon adventure and breathtaking natural beauty.

Window Wied il-Mielaħ on Gozo

Heading towards the north-west coast of Gozo, we discover Wied il-Mielaħ, a natural limestone arch serving as a window framing the deep blue Mediterranean horizon . Wied il-Mielaħ translates as "Salt Valley", and a hike down to the coast will reveal traces of this ancient work.

At sunset, the arch creates a powerful and majestic scene, casting long shadows on the rippling water, a must-see for photographers. As the sun begins to set, the arch casts long shadows across the rippling water, adding an extra layer of visual intrigue.

Caves of Santa Maria on Comino Island

Everyone knows that the Blue Lagoon is one of the most iconic places in Malta, but the tiny island of Comino offers more hidden gems beyond the famous lagoon . For a truly special experience, consider exploring the Santa Maria Caves in the afternoon. Look for local boat tours offering day trips around Comino - many of them include a stop at these spectacular caves. Divers can opt for a day dive with a short detour into the caves after exploring the depths.

As dusk falls, the caves transform into a mesmerizing spectacle of light and shadow. A warm glow reflects off the turquoise waters, illuminating the limestone caves and framing the rugged Comino coastline for a breathtaking finale.
